Dr. Helen Richards

Dr. Richards has been practicing medicine since 1969 graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in Colombo Sri Lanka in October 1969.

After one year internship in OBS/GYN and Internal Medicine in Colombo, Dr. Richards worked at her father’s hospital in Colombo for a couple of months and left for the US in Dec 1970.

Dr. Richards did a rotating internship at Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens from July 1971-June 1972.

Pathology residency at Beth Israel Hospital in NYC from July 1972-June 1976. Pediatric Pathology Fellowship at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Medical Center (BHC) July 1976-June 1977 and a Blood Bank Fellow ship at NYU/BHC Medical Center July 1977-June 1979.

She is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking.

Dr. Richards was hired as the Blood Bank Director in July 1979 and continued in this position until July of 1995 when she assumed the position of the Director of Pathology and continues as the Blood Bank Director.

She is an active member of several pathology professional organizations to and served in several blood bank committees.

Is currently on the Board of Directors Council of Hospital Blood Bank, Directors of the Greater New York Region

Inspector of Laboratories for College of American Pathologist, Laboratory Accreditation Program.

Serves on the Demarest Board of Health and a member of the Sri Lanka Medical Association of North America.
